About Try Sports

Try Sports is a community-driven initiative that builds on the strengths of home-educated children by providing accessible and inclusive rugby and football sessions. Our programme celebrates diversity and creates opportunities for children to develop their skills, confidence, and love for sports.

While we actively amplify participation among Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) families, we welcome all children to join a supportive environment where they can enhance their physical health, well-being, and social connections. Through strength-based coaching and community engagement, we empower young people to thrive in sports and beyond.

90% of parents recognised their children's strengths and growth, noting enhanced physical and mental well-being as they built confidence, resilience, and new skills.

90% of parents highlighted the growth and resilience their children developed, noting a positive impact on both their physical and mental well-being.

Over 12 weeks, we empowered 30+ home-educated children to develop confidence, teamwork, and physical skills through structured sports, creating opportunities for them to thrive in an environment where they could build on their strengths and abilities.

Why Try Sports?

Home-educated children bring unique strengths and potential to sports but often have fewer opportunities to develop them in a team setting. Try Sports builds on their abilities by providing structured, engaging, and community-driven sports sessions that nurture teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong love of physical activity.

Our programme creates inclusive spaces where children can develop their skills, form connections, and thrive—expanding access to structured sports, fostering social interaction, and celebrating diverse approaches to participation.

Our Impact

Through Try Sports, we have created new opportunities for home-educated children to build on their strengths, develop confidence, and thrive in a supportive sports environment.

  • Expanding Opportunities – Our structured rugby and football sessions empower children to engage in regular, high-quality physical activity, unlocking their potential and fostering a love for sports.

  • Building Social Connections – By nurturing teamwork, communication, and leadership, we create spaces where young people strengthen relationships, develop new skills, and grow together.

  • Celebrating Diverse Participation – Try Sports has welcomed families from diverse backgrounds, amplifying representation and encouraging inclusive participation in sports.

  • Revitalising Community Sports – In response to the closure of local youth centres, we have created a safe, consistent, and welcoming space where children can develop their skills, confidence, and well-being while being part of a thriving sports community.

Why Rugby?

Research showcases the strengths and opportunities within rugby to engage young people from diverse backgrounds:

  • Expanding Access & Inclusion – RFU’s Project Rugby has successfully introduced over 25,000 new players, demonstrating the sport’s ability to welcome participants from all backgrounds, including 3,340 from BAME communities.

  • Enhancing Well-being & Resilience – Rugby nurtures physical health, self-discipline, and perseverance, empowering young people to develop confidence and life skills that extend beyond the game.

  • Broadening Opportunities – Adaptations like non-contact formats (e.g., T1 Rugby) ensure the sport remains accessible and inclusive, allowing more young people to experience the benefits of structured team sports.

By building on these strengths, Try Sports is creating meaningful pathways for long-term engagement in sports, fostering belonging, leadership, and personal development in an inclusive and supportive community.
